I’m pinch-hitting for MLBTR proprietor Tim Dierkes for this week’s version of the MLBTR Mailbag. This week, we’ll have a look at Houston’s dreadful first base state of affairs, the Cubs’ latest struggles, the Mariners’ latest surge, the Cardinals’ wants, the Nationals’ deadline outlook, Jazz Chisholm Jr.‘s commerce worth, and extra!
Reynold asks:
There are a selection of first basemen on the discard pile. Should you have been [Astros GM] Dana Brown, do you choose any of these suspects over Jon Singleton? J.D. Davis, Garrett Cooper, and many others?
Singleton is a fairly outstanding comeback story, and for him to even make it to the majors in any respect after such a prolonged hiatus — not to mention discover himself in an everyday position — is commendable. Sentimentality does not win video games, nonetheless, and Singleton is a 32-year-old subpar defender whose .219/.319/.331 batting line is beneath common and nowhere close to sturdy sufficient to offset his lack of worth with the glove. I am as shocked as most Astros followers that the staff continues to be trotting him on the market.
